New York Remote Online Notary Overview
Alabama
Although Alabama does not currently have its own Remote Online Notarization (RON) law, it does accept notarizations that are legally completed by notaries in other states. This means if an online notarization is performed by a notary public commissioned in a state that allows RON, and it follows the laws of that state, it is valid and enforceable in Alabama.

Alaska
Alaska law allows commissioned notaries to perform remote online notarizations in accordance with Alaska Stat. § 44.50.075 et seq..
Additionally, Alaska honors notarizations conducted online by out-of-state notaries, as long as they are performed in compliance with the laws of the commissioning state. This recognition is supported by Alaska Stat. § 09.63.050, which upholds the validity of out-of-state notarizations.
Arizona
Arizona authorizes its notaries to perform remote online notarizations under Ariz. Rev. Stat. Ann. §§ 41-371 et seq. (in effect until June 30, 2022) and Ariz. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 41-263 (effective June 30, 2022).
In addition, Arizona recognizes online notarizations properly performed by notaries commissioned in other states. The relevant interstate recognition laws are:

Arkansas
Arkansas authorizes its notaries public to perform remote online notarizations in accordance with Ark. Code Ann. §§ 21-14-301 et seq..
Additionally, Arkansas honors online notarizations performed by notaries commissioned in other states, provided they are conducted in compliance with the laws of the commissioning state. This recognition is supported by the following interstate acknowledgment statutes:
California
Although California does not currently have its own Remote Online Notarization (RON) law, it does recognize notarizations that are properly performed by notaries in other states. This means that if an online notarization is conducted by a notary commissioned in a RON-authorized state—and it complies with that state’s laws—it is valid and enforceable in Connecticut.

Delaware
Delaware authorizes its notaries to perform remote online notarizations under Del. Code Ann. tit. 29, § 4320, effective August 1, 2023.
Additionally, Delaware recognizes notarizations, including remote online notarizations, that are properly performed by notaries commissioned in other states—as long as they comply with the laws of the commissioning state. This recognition is supported by the following statutes:

Hawaii authorizes its notaries to perform remote online notarizations under Haw. Rev. Stat. § 456-23.

Idaho authorizes its notaries to perform remote online notarizations under Idaho Code § 51-114A.

Montana authorizes its notaries to perform remote online notarizations (RON) pursuant to Mont. Code Ann. §§ 1-5-602 et seq.

New Hampshire
New Hampshire authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to RSA 456-B, which incorporates the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts (RULONA). This law became effective on February 6, 2022, through Senate Bill 134.
In addition, New Hampshire recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are found within RSA 456-B:3 and related provisions.
New Jersey
New Jersey authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to N.J. Stat. §§ 52:7-10.9 and 52:7-10.10.
In addition, New Jersey recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are N.J. Stat. §§ 52:7-10.14, 46:14-6.1, 41:2-17, and 2A:82-7.
New Mexico
New Mexico authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to N.M. Stat. Ann. § 14-14A-5.
In addition, New Mexico recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is N.M. Stat. Ann. § 14-14A-10.
New York
New York authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to N.Y. Exec. Law § 135-C(2).
In addition, New York recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are N.Y. Real Prop. Law §§ 299, 299-a, 309-b, and N.Y. Civ. Prac. L.R. § 2309.
North Carolina
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in North Carolina due to interstate recognition.
Although North Carolina does not currently have a remote online notarization (RON) law in place, it recognizes notarizations properly performed by notaries commissioned in other states. As a result, an online notarization conducted in accordance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state is considered valid in North Carolina. The relevant interstate recognition statutes are N.C. Gen. Stat. § 10B-20(f), § 10B-40(e), and § 47-2.2.
North Dakota
North Dakota authorizes its notaries to perform remote online notarizations under N.D. Cent. Code § 44-06.1-13.1.
Additionally, North Dakota recognizes online notarizations that are lawfully performed by notaries commissioned in other states. The applicable interstate recognition statute is N.D. Cent. Code § 44-06.1-10.
Ohio
North Dakota authorizes its notaries to perform remote online notarizations under N.D. Cent. Code § 44-06.1-13.1.
Additionally, North Dakota recognizes online notarizations that are lawfully performed by notaries commissioned in other states. The applicable interstate recognition statute is N.D. Cent. Code § 44-06.1-10.
Oklahoma
Oklahoma authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Okla. Stat. tit. 49 §§ 201 et seq..
In addition, Oklahoma recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Okla. Stat. tit. 49 § 115 and Okla. Stat. tit. 16 §§ 35 & 37b.
Oregon
Oklahoma authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Okla. Stat. tit. 49 §§ 201 et seq..

Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to 57 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 306.1.

Rhode Island
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Rhode Island through the application of interstate recognition laws.
Although Rhode Island does not currently authorize its own notaries to perform remote online notarizations (RON), it recognizes notarizations that are lawfully conducted by notaries commissioned in other states. As a result, an online notarization carried out in accordance with the laws of a notary’s commissioning state is considered valid and enforceable in Rhode Island. The relevant statutes include R.I. Gen. Laws § 42-30.1-10 and R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 34-12-1 to 34-12-3.
South Carolina
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in Rhode Island through the application of interstate recognition laws.

As a result, an online notarization carried out in accordance with the laws of a notary’s commissioning state is considered valid and enforceable in Rhode Island. The relevant statutes include R.I. South Dakota
Online notarization is valid and enforceable in South Dakota through the application of interstate recognition provisions.
While South Dakota does not currently authorize its notaries to perform remote online notarizations (RON), it does recognize notarizations that are lawfully performed by notaries commissioned in other states. Therefore, an online notarization conducted in compliance with the laws of the notary’s commissioning state is valid in South Dakota. The relevant statutes include S.D. Codified Laws § 18-5-3 and S.D. Codified Laws § 15-6-28(a).
Tennessee
Tennessee authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Tenn. Code Ann. §§ 8-16-301 et seq..
In addition, Tennessee recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws include Tenn. Code Ann. § 66-22-103, § 66-22-107, § 66-22-110, § 66-22-114, § 66-22-115, and § 8-16-116.
Texas
Texas authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Tex. Gov’t Code §§ 406.101 et seq..
In addition, Texas recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws include Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code §§ 121.001, 121.003, and 121.004, as well as Tex. Gov’t Code § 602.003.
Utah
Utah authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Utah Code Ann. §§ 46-1-2(17) et seq..
In addition, Utah recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Utah Code Ann. § 57-2a-3.
Vermont
Vermont authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Vt. Stat. Ann. tit. 26, § 5364(b)(2), pending the adoption of administrative rules by the Vermont Secretary of State.
In addition, Vermont recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Vt. Stat. Ann. tit. 26 § 5374.
Virginia
Virginia authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Va. Code Ann. § 47.1-2.
In addition, Virginia recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws include Va. Code Ann. § 55.1-616, § 47.1-13.1, § 55.1-612, and § 49-5.
Washington
Washington authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Wash. Rev. Code Ann. § 42.45.280.
In addition, Washington recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws are Wash. Rev. Code Ann. §§ 42.45.090 & 64.08.020.
West Virginia
West Virginia authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to W. Va. Code §§ 39-4-6 and 39-4-37.
In addition, West Virginia recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws include W. Va. Code §§ 39-4-11, 39-1-3, 39-1-10, 57-4-2, and 57-5-9.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Wis. Stat. Ann. § 140.145.
In addition, Wisconsin recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition laws include Wis. Stat. Ann. § 140.11 and Wis. Stat. Ann. § 887.01.
Wyoming
Wyoming authorizes its notaries to perform online notarizations pursuant to Wyo. Stat. Ann. § 32-3-111.
In addition, Wyoming recognizes online notarizations that are properly performed by notaries of other states. The applicable interstate recognition law is Wyo. Stat. Ann. § 32-3-106.
